Best things to do in Naxos
The beautiful island of Naxos constitutes a favorite holiday resort because of its stunning natural beauty, the delicious local cuisine and the numerous historical sites that one can visit here.
The beautiful, long sandy beaches of the island are definitely worth visiting. Whether you love swimming in a crowded beach or in a more secluded area, Naxos can definitely cater for all tastes. There are various organized beaches in the area such as Saint George beach but there are options even for those who seek isolation, for example Panermos beach.

The island is famous for its windy climate and therefore, it is a great spot for anyone who is keen on sports such as windsurfing and kitesurfing. However, even if you are just a beginner, it is the ideal place to take courses and learn how to master these sports.
Another suggestion would be to go hiking on mount Zeus, which is the highest mountain in the Cyclades. According to the mythological legend this mountain was the birthplace of Zeus and therefore, it is definitely worth exploring the caves of Zeus. If you choose to reach the summit, the panoramic view of the island will definitely reward you.

The horse-riding club that is situated in close proximity to the hotel offers one more alternative choice for people who are fond of both animals and nature. Even if you have never before ridden a horse in your life, this is the best place to take a course and have a unique experience that you shall never forget.
Of course, you must not forget to visit important historical sites that will truly leave a lasting impression on you. The ancient monument of Portara is one of the most famous landmarks on the island. It is the marble gate of the temple of Apollo and it is definitely a place you don’t want to miss. The best time to visit Portara is at dusk so that you can admire the romantic and colorful sunset.

It is also recommended that you explore the Castle which is located in Hora, the capital of the island. It is a picturesque castle town that was built by the Venetians and it was named after its most prominent landmark, the town’s castle. It consists of numerous narrow alleys, churches and multiple fortifications.
If you like sightseeing, the temple of Demeter which is near the village of Sangri is certainly another option for you. It dates back to the 6th century BC and it was built using top-quality marble from the island itself. The statues of Kouros are another famous landmark and they can be found in the villages of Melanes and Apollonas. Their enormous size will definitely take your breath away.

The church of Panagia Drossiani is the oldest Christian church in Naxos and there are two different versions as to how it took its name. Some believe that the area where it was built was called Drossia, while others claim that its name can be attributed to the fact that the icon weeps whenever the village is in danger. Whichever the case, you undoubtedly want to visit it and admire its amazing architecture.
Another religious place to visit is the Monastery of Christ Fotodotis in Danakos. Tradition has it that it was built by a Byzantine princess after she was saved from the rough seas in the area.

Do not forget to sample the local delicacies that are more than likely to sweep you away and make you never want to leave. What is more, make sure you attend the local cultural events and traditional fairs. More particularly, the Naxos Festival lasts throughout the summer and it is definitely worth attending. If you happen to visit the island in September, do not miss the famous Wine Festival and the Fisherman’s Feast that are held then.
All in all, Naxos is a remarkable place and you will certainly have a lot of places to visit and numerous activities to do here that will make your trip to the island truly unforgettable.
